I’m sure we all know in the back of our minds that to some degree many of the common household items that we’ve been using for years and probably even grew up with are not the best for us. In fact a lot of them contain chemicals that could be damaging to your health. This year I want to focus on choosing healthier alternatives for my family and that includes swapping out some of our most commonly used items. And with so many alternatives out there, it’s easier than ever to make these simple swaps. These are 5 household items to get rid of NOW, plus their better-for-you alternatives.

Teflon Pots and Pans

Teflon is a chemical found in many non-stick pots and pans. It’s what makes them non-stick. But what a lot of people don’t know is that when heated above a certain temperature, Teflon becomes toxic and can start to seep into whatever you’re cooking. Nowadays there are many other alternatives to Teflon pots and pans. There are cast iron skillets, which are natural, so don’t contain any chemicals. Stainless steel is another great option, as are ceramic coated or granite pots and pans.

Aluminum Foil

Aluminum foil has so many household uses that the thought of replacing it can sound daunting. But I am here to tell you it’s not as long as you have the right alternatives. For wrapping up food or covering dishes, try beeswax wraps. They also make universal silicone lids that can cover a variety of containers. To cover baking sheets, use silicone baking mats. Glass or stainless steel food storage containers are also great to have on hand. Not only are these options healthier for you, but they are better for the planet as well.

Takeout Freebies

As tempting as it is to save and reuse those takeout containers, oftentimes they are made with harmful BPAs. So not only should you not store your food in them, you also shouldn’t reheat anything in them either. Instead, store your leftovers in glass food containers or silicone food storage bags, which also make a great alternative to Ziploc bags.

Candles and Air Fresheners

Scented candles and air fresheners contain so many chemicals. When in use they release those chemicals into the air for you to breathe in. Now if you’ve been around long enough you know that I love my clean air device and have been using it over scented candles and air fresheners for years now. They keep my house smelling fresh without the chemicals, which gives me peace of mind, especially with having little ones around.

Toxic Cleaners

So many of our everyday household cleaners have strong chemicals in them that can be harmful when used continuously over time. Try switching out your normal cleaning products for non-toxic ones, such as ones from Grove Collaborative or Mrs. Meyers.

These are just 5 household items to get rid of NOW! I know there are more that could’ve been listed, but this is just what I am starting with in my home. I want to use products that are not harmful to my family and these alternatives are a great way for me to start swapping those out.
