Basement Living Room Reveal

The time has come! Today I am sharing…drumroll please… my long-awaited basement living room reveal! This reveal has been a long time coming. And this project has been a long one. I started this way back in May with the DIY checkerboard backsplash in the kitchen area and it has continued on with multiple projects from there.

Let’s go back to right after Junie was born (almost two years ago – where has time gone). That’s when I did my asymmetrical accent wall in my basement. That wall, the wall behind the TV and the trim on the opposite walls are all painted Amherst Gray by Benjamin Moore in an eggshell finish to unify the color story. The color and the trim detail added great dimension and interest to the space, and for many that would have completed it. But to me, it still felt unfinished. I knew there was more I could do to make it a cozy place that the kids want to hang out.

So I started with the kitchen. Yes, we have a full kitchen down here. If you want more on that I explain it in my Modern Gray Kitchen post. To me, a kitchen doesn’t feel complete without a backsplash and I knew I wanted this one to be interesting, but not too busy. So I went with a gray and white checkerboard pattern with tiles from Bedrosians Tile and Stone and it turned out amazing!

I mentioned that I wanted this to be a space that the kids want to come and hang out and that included adding a couple of fun features for them. The first being the DIY Wooden Mini Basketball Hoop. I couldn’t find a pretty basketball hoop, so I made one! It’s been a blast for my son! Another hit has been the DIY Giant Wall Tic Tac Toe. I’ve come downstairs multiple times since creating it to the kids playing tic tac toe and it’s fun to watch them strategize and play.

Finally, the biggest part of this project is complete and that is the Brick Veneer Wall. This took a long time and the efforts of multiple people. It was definitely a labor of love, but it turned out so good! I purposefully did the brick to mimic the exterior of the house, so it connects the interior with the exterior. Brick, to me, automatically cozies up a space and that’s exactly what it did in our basement.

It took all summer, but our basement living room reveal is done just in time for the kids to be able to play inside all winter. I know they’ll have a blast down here with their friends.
