Black tile and white oak cabinetry…yes Please! My sons bathroom has turned out to be one of my favorite bathrooms in our entire house.  Something about the neutral yet bold design has me all heart eyes over here.

Let’s start with the natural wood vanity.  I designed this piece to resemble a dresser but function as a regular vanity.  The middle “drawers”  are actually cabinet doors which the hardware helps disguise.  His cabinet is made from natural white oak and protected with this sealer.  We used this product on all the white oak in my home to protect the wood but maintain the natural color. All my cabinets were built by RL Henrie Custom Cabinetry.

The counter top is the same quartz we used in our basement.  It’s Nouveau Calacatta from Arizona Tile.

The mix of black hardware helps create that furniture feeling.  I got the black knobs hammered knobs HERE and the black file drawer pulls HERE.  Oh and the bottom of the cabinet pulls out as a stepping stool.  Later in life as my son grows, this pull out stool can be flipped to create a drawer.  Always thinking ahead!

The bathroom floor is a graphite (black) penny tile with frost grout. Frost is a light gray grout, but paired with the black tile it comes across white.  I actually love the way this tile feels under foot… massage like.

We opted for a walk in shower instead of a tub in here.  The shower walls are covered with a white picket tile that create a modern geometric look.  Paired with a black grout it really echos the sharpie wall I recently finished.  The full tutorial on How to create the “wallpaper look” with a sharpe is HERE.

All of the plumbing fixtures in his bathroom are matte black with modern silhouettes.  The vanity light is my favorite. I love the introduction of the chrome that plays so well with the other metal accents in his bedroom.  The round black mirror and oversized light bulbs break up all the sharpe angles on the wall and play off of the penny tile floor. You could totally switch this sconce vertically and trade out the bulbs for a whole different look! It also comes in black and brass!  The full tutorial on How to create the “wallpaper look” with a sharpe is HERE.

  1. I love it! I really didn’t think I’d be back onto stained wood so quickly but you and a few other bloggers are changing my mind.

Having a home full of 1980s oak that I’d like to rip out, I have to ask about your choice to use oak. Is it “prepared” differently today so that the raised grain that causes so many headaches is no longer an issue? Or would you change the vanity if you want painted in the future? Or is white oak the way to go to avoid this?

I’m also sitting here wondering if I could try your bleached wood tutorial to update some of my oak that hasn’t been painted yet? Any chance my orangey 80s oak can be transformed without paint?

    1. Hi, I would def test the bleaching method on some of your oak and see if you like it. White oak wood is expensive, so if you plan to paint it I would def not use it. It is prepared differently, which is why the wood tone is so different.

  2. My fellow Utah girl, you are fabulous!! I love your DIY heart, and tips you give that I have used and loved! Thanks for the inspiration ??❤️

  3. This bathroom is incredible! I ordered the vanity light, but it didnt come with bulbs. What bulbs do you use? Thanks!
