French country modern: Exterior Inspiration

The French country home is reminiscent of the rural French countryside. French country floor plans often employ brick, stone or stucco exteriors, and large rooflines, sometimes with balconies.   Our french country Modern home will be wrapped in brick all the way around.  I love a classic red brick, esp one with age, but our home will be painted a creamy white.  Something about painted white brick just makes my heart happy.

Here is the exterior elevation of our soon to be new home!  According to my contractor, our French country modern home should take 10 months to construct.   If everything goes according to plan, which I hear never happens lol, then we should be moving in by July or August of 2018.  Ignore the siding details that appear on the second story.  Everything will be covered in brick with a double chimney stack and copper awning details.  I’m still not 100% certain on the roofing material, but i’ve got ideas…maybe enough for a whole different post!  I know right…How interesting can roofing be?  I promise there are so many choices its overwhelming!

French Country Modern: Exterior Inspiration- Painted white brick

Although, painted white brick is on trend right now, it is also a classic restoration technique.  Since I want my home to take on the old french county look (but with a modern twist), I though this would be the perfect application. Here are some homes to help you visualize the direction we will be taking with this exterior.

Speaking of roofing, maybe you can give me your option?  Do you like the softness of the brown wood shingles or the contrast of the dark gray or black roofing? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below!  As always thanks for stopping in and I hope you’ll join me on this building journey.  Pin the image below to share with others!

  1. I like the dark grey or black contrast for the roofing where your building in the “city”. If you were building in the country, I’d definitely go with the soft brown roofing! Just my take 🙂

  3. So excited for you and your beautiful family! We know you will create a gorgeous space, and I am so happy we get to see it!!

  4. I personally love the dark gray. My favorites are gray slate tiles or gray scallop clay tiles.

  5. Mysha it’s going to be so gorg!!!! I love the white!! That’s what I wanted so bad but they just don’t offer that here unless you do a complete custom. Maybe our next home. I can’t wait to see the process step-by-step! All these examples are so beautiful!

  6. Black or dark charcoal roof. The front elevation has several arched windows, arched door and other detailing that speaks to French country. The clean look of black and white will help to infuse the modern vibe that is missing architecturally.

  7. Oh wow, I love the white!! It’s a hard choice between the soft brown and the dark, but I do love the contrast of the dark gray or black roofing. Black and white mixes so well and makes it easy to add in things both modern and traditional. Can’t wait to see how this shapes up!

  8. Dark gray or black roofing, most definitely. The contrast is so beautiful and timeless! What an exciting journey for you 🙂 Congratulations!

  9. Hi Mysha. I vote dark grey or black. I think it will be stunning with the copper detail. Look forward to the progress.

  10. Hi, I love it. I have a question. In a few of the houses there are some small areas where they leave out bricks, up near the peaks of the roof line. What are those? Are they there for birds to make a nest in, or do they serve some other purpose? What are they called?

  11. I personally like the dark grey or black roofing. Either way you go it will look great though! Can’t wait to see the finished product.

  12. I say go with gray or black if you are going to do the white with black trimmed windows. Otherwise I do like the softness of the brown with the lighter windows. It’s a tough call and I think my decision would have a lot to do with what’s around me in the neighborhood as well. I like to do my own thing and if everybody has one thing I like to usually veer a little differently but it depends also on what sort of driveway and front landscaping you want. I think sometimes the softer brown roof really keeps white houses soft and light. You’ll have to text me what you are thinking. Love all your choices… xx

  13. Hello Misha
If the roof is brown or black then it is more the French countryside of the north of France. In Provence, the roofs are in brown / red tiles

  14. I love the clean look of black and white. The theme is carried inside with all your Mackenzie – Child’s accent pieces. It will be gorgeous with any of these choices.
