How to Frame a Vintage Hermès Scarf

I recently shared with my Instagram peeps what I would be doing with my silk Hermès scarf.  I was shocked to hear so many of you have had similar heirlooms just sitting in boxes collecting dust.  I would definitely consider these scarves to be art, and just like art, they can appreciate over time.

How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf

Hermès scarves are a great addition to a wardrobe, and can instantly add individuality to any style. They are also highly collectible and timeless, holding their value far better than any other scarves on the market. Since 1937, there have been up to 1,200 individual Hermès scarf designs created, with additional designs still being released on a seasonal basis. I say if your not going to wear them, THEN FRAME THEM!

 Choosing the perfect Frame for your Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf

  1. Measure your scarf.  The larger the scarf, the more expensive the frame.  Keep that in mind as you choose your perfect Hermès Scarf.  Both of my scarves are the 35×35″ size.  NOTE: There are 3 sizes to Hermès scarves: 17×17″, 24×24″, and 35×35″. You can easily bring the cost down by going with a smaller size. 
  2. Decide whether you would like matting or no matting. I opted against matting simply due to the solid boarder of the scarf design and the large size.  If I were to frame the smaller sizes, I would consider a matte. Note: Frame it Easy does not offer matting for art this size: 35×35″.
  3. Order your frame. Click Here to order your custom frame.  Frame it easy makes it super simple to find the perfect frame for your art.   4. Custom Frame Delivery. I went with style 93 in a satin black frame and style 15 in a satin gold frame both 35″x35″.  Both frames were packaged perfectly to protect the size and delivered right to my door damage free.  Note:  I absolutely love the way the gold framed scarf turned out. In retro spect I would have ordered a 38″x38″ black frame for the blue and white Hermès scarf.  The organic border on this scarf is much smaller and I think it would showcased better with a bit of white bordering it. How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf

Diy: How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf

  1. Steam or Iron your silk scarf.  I used my favorite hand held steamer to get rid of all the creases and wrinkles.  Hold your steamer about 6″ from the silk and move from top to bottom.  If you dont have a steamer, set your iron to the silk setting (or lowest setting).  Place a pillowcase over the scarf and iron.  Tip: silk is a delicate fabric, do not iron directly on the scarf or place the steamer too close.  How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf
  2. Remove the metal brackets from 2 corners of the frame. Slide out the foam backing board and acrylic glass.How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf
  3. Pin or Tape your silk scarf to the acid free foam core board. I pinned one of my scarves and taped the other.  Some people say not to pin because it could create damage to the scarf. I pinned right at the rolled hem sticking the pin into the side of the foam board. Make sure not to pull the scarf too tight as to avoid holes over time.  If you are using tape, be sure to use framers tape only.How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès ScarfHow to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf
  4. Remove protective film from one side of the Acrylic glass. Place the clean side of the acrylic face down onto the scarf.  Remove the other side of the protective film being carful not to put your hands on the newly exposed acrylic.  We don’t want finger prints here.How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf
  5. Slide the foam core, scarf, and acrylic sandwich into the frame. I found it easiest to place the frame face down and slide it onto my mounted art.  The frame is much lighter than the art and easier to move.
  6. Secure the two metal mounting brackets back onto the frame with the screws. How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf
  7. Ensure there is no space for your backing to move in the frame by placing the spring clips between the back of the foam core board and frame.  I used 2 one each side of the frame.How to Frame a Vintage Silk Hermès Scarf
  8. Dust of the acrylic and hang your art!
