Modern Gray Kitchen
Time for a reveal and this time it’s the modern gray kitchen in our basement! This whole project started with the DIY Tile Checkerboard Backsplash project, which just so happened to be my first project after my surgery. Now that the checkerboard backsplash is complete, I was able to style this kitchen to make it look lived in, but not cluttered.
But before I go into too many details, I want to address the number one question about our basement, which is, “Why do you have a full second kitchen?” To answer that, when we built this house, we were about 90% sure my parents were going to move in with us. So, we put in a full kitchen, guest room, and laundry room, the whole shebang. Then that didn’t end up happening, so now we have a full second kitchen!
Now that you know the background behind our basement kitchen, let’s get into the details!
Starting with the floors. The flooring is LVP – Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring in a herringbone pattern from Lumber Liquidators. The flooring I chose is Tranquility 3mm Malted Oak LVP. I loved the warmth and texture of this flooring and the color variation is very forgiving. You can read more about my flooring in my original basement blog post that I did when the floors were first installed.
The painted cabinets are Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore. I made the floating shelves, which are just natural white oak with a clear stain, and while I don’t have a tutorial for them, HERE is a tutorial for other floating shelves I’ve done. Or HERE is a link to similar shelves from Pottery Barn.
The countertops are Quartz and the name of them is Nouveau Calacatta. It’s the same marble that I used on the fireplace surround across the room in the family room. I think the dramatic gray veining makes such a bold statement!

If you haven’t read my recent blog post, I talked about my tile backsplash and gave a full tutorial there. But for a little rundown, I used the Chloe tiles from Bedrosian Tile and Stone in white and gray. And I also used the rounded ends in both colors to finish off the edges. The trick to this DIY was that using adhesive backing instead of mortar to stick the tiles to the wall and it worked so well. So be sure to check out that post for more on how to do that.
I finished up the kitchen with some functional styling. I wasn’t going to leave empty shelves, but I also don’t like clutter for the sake of clutter. So, I chose to add some functional pieces like candlesticks, a cutting board, and even a cookbook. I also added a fruit basket. What I didn’t want to do was add things that wouldn’t belong in the kitchen. We may not use this kitchen much, but when we do, I still want it to function like the real kitchen it is.
Lastly, these barstools make such a bold statement. I love the unique design the backs of them have! I have linked a high and low option for you to shop!
