The best Oreo cookie cake doesn’t have to be hard. Doctor up some cake mix and top with the best Oreo buttercream frosting you’ve ever tasted, and bam! There you have it. It’s a rich, moist, 3 layered cake with a layer of vanilla cake sandwiched between 2 layers of dark chocolate cake. Just like an Oreo cookie.

The Best Oreo Cookie Cake

My daughter, Lou, LOVES Oreos and requested this special Oreo cookie cake for her 7th birthday. She dreamt up this magical cake in her head.  I had never made an Oreo cake before, but I sure know how to make any box cake amazing. So I knew what to do.  It all starts with a simple box cake (I prefer Duncan Hines). I know it sounds too easy, but I promise this foundational cake recipe will be your new go-to recipe!

Oreo Cookie Cake

I add a few essential ingredients like, sour cream, pudding mix, and an extra egg. These extra ingredients will take your cake from store bought box cake, to flavorful and moist every time.

Normally when I make this cake (either vanilla or chocolate), I would just use two 9×13 pans for a double layer cake. But since this is an extra special Oreo cookie cake, it has three layers. You will need 1 box of vanilla cake, and 1 box of dark chocolate cake. I bake all 4 cakes (2 pans of each flavor) and freeze the unused vanilla layer for a later date.

The Best Oreo Cookie Cake

I feel like 7 year olds are funny about cake. Some really like it and some don’t at all. This cake was nearly devoured before I could get a picture of the last slice. I think it’s safe to say that this oreo cookie cake is now a family favorite.

Once you add the creamy homemade buttercream oreo frosting, no one will ever know it all started with a box cake mix!

I know this recipe is for an Oreo cookie cake, but this recipe is great to have on hand as a foundational cake recipe as well. Because these are chocolate and vanilla cakes, they are so versatile. So once you bake the cakes, you can take them in any direction you want to go. All you need to do is swap out the frosting flavor!

Cake Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line two 9" pans with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray. In a large bowl mix everything together for chocolate cake. We will repeat all these steps for the vanilla cake.

  2. Pour batter into prepared pans and follow the cooking time instructions on the back of the dark chocolate cake box. You may need to add about 10 minutes extra to whatever it says. You can always check with a toothpick to see if it's done.

  3. Remove pans and let rest 5 minutes on a cooling rack before removing the cakes. let cakes cool completely before frosting.

  4. Repeat all steps for vanilla cake, combining all the ingredients (cake mix, pudding, sour cream, eggs, oil, and milk. Mix together and bake according to the instructions on the box.

Frosting Instructions

  1. In a food processor or a zip lock bag, blend or crush Oreos until they turn into a powder consistency.

  2. Mix butter with powdered sugar a 1/2 cup at a time until all blended. Add vanilla and heavy cream and mix well. Add crushed Oreos and blend.

  3. if the mixture is too thick, add an additional teaspoon of heavy cream one at a time until desired thickness and consistency is achieved.

  4. Spread between each layer of cake and all over the sides and top. I simply used a zip lock bag (cut a small corner off and piped on the small twirls of frosting on the top. Decorate with whole Oreo cookies til you achieve the final look you like.
