DIY Alice In Wonderland Family Costume

DIY | Family | holiday

This Halloween, our whole family fell down the rabbit hole, wink wink. Picking a family costume theme is one of my favorite traditions. Alice in Wonderland was the one that had everyone excited. There’s a character for every age and personality! The colors are bold and happy, and it’s the kind of theme where handmade pieces really shine. We mixed a few store-bought basics with a lot of DIY! I’m sharing exactly how we pulled Our DIY Alice in Wonderland family costume together so you can steal the idea for your crew!

This was last year’s costume…any guesses on what we will be this year?

How we dressed the fam for this year’s family halloween costume:

  • Alice: Our littlest Juni wore the classic blue dress with a white pinafore apron, a big blue hair bow, white tights and little white gloves. Simple and so, so sweet. We used Elsa’s old braids for Alice’s – when not in use…

I found everything for these DIY costumes here!

Family Halloween Costume
  • The White Rabbit: Fluffy bunny ears, a burgundy jacket, an oversized blue bow, a pink tulle tutu, argyle socks and a giant pocket watch, because she’s always running late.
  • The Queen of Hearts: A full red tulle gown, big red hair with a mini crown, a dramatic tulle ruff collar, a black cape, a checkered belt, red opera gloves and a heart scepter. Off with their heads!
  • The Mad Hatter: A towering handmade top hat, a brown vest, a patterned tie, plaid pants, Converse and a cane finishes the look!!
  • Tweedle: Chris went all in with a yellow collared shirt, red cap, blue bow tie, red suspenders, round navy shorts and striped socks.
  • The Card Soldier: I was a walking Four of Hearts, with red-and-white striped tights, red heels, a heart headband and heart sunglasses. It turned out SO cute!!

How We Made the Pieces For Our DIY Alice In Wonderland Family Costume:

The Mad Hatter hat: This was the showstopper. We stacked three hats – we used a black top hat, a copper hat and a checkered-brim hat. From there, we cut patterned fabric into diamonds and glued them on for a harlequin look. Love a good pattern moment. We stuffed the gaps with batting and finished it with feathers, ribbon, a scarf, a deep red flower and an ace of spades tucked in the band. Done!

The playing card: All you need is a white board, a ruler and a black marker for the border! Then, simply cut out red paper hearts cut out by hand and glue them on. Add a “4” and a small heart in each corner and you’re done! It truly was one of my faves!

The Queen’s collar: Layers of red and black tulle gathered onto a white collar give that big, regal look! Remi loved it.

The White Rabbit’s pocket watch: We traced a circle onto cardboard, drew in the numbers and hands, and hung it from a gold chain.

Tweedle’s round belly: This was our favorite hack! Thread a hula hoop through the waistband of oversized navy shorts for that perfectly round Tweedle shape.

Tips for Your Own Family Halloween Costume:

Our DIY Alice in Wonderland family costume
  1. Assign characters by personality. Our dramatic one was born to be the Queen!
  2. Buy the basics, DIY the statement pieces. A few handmade details make the whole group look custom. And the rest of the project can be made into one big family craft!
  3. Take photos early!! This is a lot of work and honestly, you want to capture it all! Snap your group shot before trick-or-treating, while the tulle is still fluffy and the hats are still on. IYKYK with littles.

If you’re looking for a family Halloween costume that works for the whole family, Alice in Wonderland is a winner! We’re late, we’re late, for a very important date…can’t wait to see what you all are this year!
