Low-Sugar Puppy Chow Recipe: A Sweet & Salty Gluten-Free Snack

If you’re looking for a delicious, gluten-free, and lower-sugar snack, this twist on the classic “puppy chow” (also known as muddy buddies) is perfect! Made with my favorite gluten-free ingredients and a reduced-sugar chocolate option, this sweet and salty treat is ideal for any occasion—whether it’s game day, a party, or just a family snack.

Why This Puppy Chow Recipe is Healthier
- Lily’s Milk Chocolate Chips: These chips contain just 1g of sugar per tablespoon compared to the 9g found in regular chocolate chips, making them a much healthier option!
- Gluten-Free: By using gluten-free pretzels and rice Chex, this recipe is safe for those with gluten sensitivities.
- Lower Sodium: I also love using Jif’s Natural Low Sodium Peanut Butter to balance the sweet and salty flavors while keeping it a bit healthier.

How to Make Gluten-Free Puppy Chow
Ingredients
- 9 oz Lily’s semi-sweet chocolate Chips
- 1/2 cup Jif’s Natural Low Sodium Peanut Butter
- 1/4 cup Salted Butter
- 4 cups Gluten-free Rice Chex Cereal
- 2 cups Gluten-free Pretzels
- 1 cup Roasted peanuts
- 2.5 cups Powdered Sugar
Instructions
-
Melt the Chocolate & Peanut Butter Mix: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute, then stir.
Continue microwaving for another 30 seconds or until the mixture is smooth.
You can also melt this on the stove at low heat, but be careful not to burn the chocolate.
-
Mix in Dry Ingredients: Once your chocolate mixture is smooth, add the Rice Chex, pretzels, and peanuts.Stir gently until everything is evenly coated in the chocolate mix.
-
Coat with Powdered Sugar: Pour 2½ cups of powdered sugar into a large ziplock bag. Spoon the chocolate-coated mix into the bag, seal it, and shake until all pieces are covered in powdered sugar.
-
Set and Store: Spread the coated mix onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper and let it set. Once cooled, store in an airtight container for up to 1 week or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. You can even freeze it for up to 3 months!

- Double the Recipe: This is a great treat for gifting! I love placing it in cute seasonal mugs, like these ghost mugs from Walmart, for neighbors or teachers. You can also serve it on a fun ghost tray for a Halloween party!
- Pro Tip: This snack is just as delicious when eaten straight from the freezer—trust me!
