DIY Family Halloween Costume Round-Up
Fall is creeping in, and that means one thing—Halloween costumes! Every year I try to come up with something fun, a little thrifty, and family-friendly. Over the years we’ve dressed up as the Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Addams Family, and most recently, an entire Old School McDonald’s crew.
Today I’m rounding them all up in one spot for you. Whether you’re into quick Amazon finds or a DIY Family Halloween Costume, I hope these ideas will inspire your crew this year!
Family Costumes over the Years
The Simpsons Family Costume
Our year as the Simpsons was hilarious and surprisingly easy to pull off with a mix of Amazon finds and a little DIY. Homer was as simple as a white polo and jeans, Marge’s look came to life with her tall blue beehive wig and green strapless dress, Lisa wore her classic red dress with spiky yellow hair, and Bart rocked his orange tee and skateboard.

DIY Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
These Ninja Turtle costumes were budget-friendly and such a hit with the kids! We made simple shells using roasting pans, spray paint, and ribbon straps, then paired them with colored tees and matching eye masks for each turtle. Add a few toy weapons, and suddenly you’ve got Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael ready for trick-or-treating.

The Addams Family Costume
For the Addams Family, we leaned into classic black outfits and a few key accessories to bring the characters to life—think Wednesday’s braids, Morticia’s sleek gown, and Gomez with his pinstripe suit. Most pieces were purchased online, making this one of the easiest family costumes to pull together. Uncle Lester stole the show though haha.

Here’s a quick breakdown so you can make your own!
DIY Hamburger Costume
- Trace something big and round twice on cardboard (these will be your burger buns).
- Hot glue fiberfill on top for shape, then cover with tan felt.
- Cut white felt sesame seeds and glue them onto the top bun.
- Add green felt lettuce leaves, a red felt tomato circle, and a yellow felt cheese square.
- Connect buns with ribbon suspenders and velcro at the sides for easy wear.

DIY Happy Meal Box

- Start with a large box. Cut a half circle for your head.
- Cover the box in red bulletin board paper.
- Cut two golden arches from cardboard, cover with yellow poster board or paint, and attach to the top.
- Add the McDonald’s smile with yellow paper or paint.
- Spray adhesive works best for attaching paper to cardboard!

Don’t Forget Ronald!

Finish it off with a Ronald McDonald wig, painted face, and striped socks. It’s a show-stopping family costume you’ll love.
