Before & After: Our Romantic Master Bedroom Design

Creating a bedroom that feels like a retreat has been on my list for a while. I wanted our master bedroom design to reflect what I see when I look out the glass doors each morning: something calm, organic, and natural. A space that feels like an extension of the outdoors but still warm and romantic.

This reveal walks through the entire design journey from my first mood board to the final styling touches. It’s one of my favorite transformations yet because it truly evolved as I worked on it.

Designing a Romantic Master Bedroom

When I started dreaming up this space, I knew I wanted something completely different than anything I’ve done before but still true to my traditional-meets-modern style. My goal was to create a romantic old-world bedroom with timeless charm and layers of natural texture.

I wanted the space to feel collected and soft, like it had been here forever, with colors that tie into the greenery and light outside my doors.

The Mural That Started It All

I contemplated several different wallpaper options before falling in love with a peel-and-stick mural called Tree on the Hill Beige from Rebel Walls. The soft landscape pattern set the tone for the entire room and instantly brought in that calm, old-world feel I was after.

Once the mural went up, it completely shifted the direction of the room. I had originally planned to use a Farrow & Ball paint color, the same one I used on my bedroom doors, but after seeing the mural installed, I knew I needed to rethink the palette.

Paint Colors for a Romantic Design

Before landing on the final color, I tested several shades including Rustic Taupe and Stone Hearth by Benjamin Moore. I even considered color drenching the room, which means painting the walls, trim, and sometimes the ceiling in the same color for a moody, monochromatic look.

With my tall ceilings, I worried that approach might feel overwhelming. Instead, I installed the mural first and then painted afterward so I could let the mural guide my paint choice. That decision paid off because I changed my mind and ended up painting my room in Stone Hearth by Benjamin Moore. I ended up with a layered mix of tones that feels both soft and sophisticated.

The Power of Molding

Adding wall molding brought depth and structure to the space. The crisp white trim frames the mural like artwork and balances out the warmer paint tones beautifully.

Lighting and Finishing Touches

For lighting, I mounted pivoting lights on either side of the headboard. It’s a small upgrade that makes a big design statement. These sconces create symmetry and give off a soft, romantic glow that feels like a boutique hotel.

Then came the layering. A textured duvet that pulls in the door color, soft drapery, vintage-inspired nightstands, and natural elements keep the space grounded and serene.

Before and After Transformation

It’s always wild to look back at where we started. Plain walls, zero personality, and now a cozy, romantic retreat with character in every corner.

What’s Next in Our Master Bedroom Makeover
