Decorating my Whimsical & Woodsy Christmas Tree
Creating a Cohesive Christmas Theme
Transforming your Christmas tree into a magical, woodsy, and whimsical centerpiece is easier than you think! This year, I drew inspiration from my mantle design to carry a cohesive theme throughout my home. With a mix of textures, shapes, and thoughtful placement, I created a tree that feels unique and enchanting.

1. Start with Twinkle Light Orbs
The first step in my Christmas tree design was adding twinkle light orbs. These are battery-operated, have a timer feature, and create an ethereal glow. I used zip ties to securely attach them to the branches since they’re larger and heavier than traditional ornaments, and I didn’t want them falling off.

For placement, I clustered 2–3 orbs of varying sizes in four groups, arranging them in a zigzag pattern down the tree. This set the stage for the rest of the design. (“look for less” option for these orbs)
2. Add Silver Bulb Garland

Next, I used a silver bulb garland, draping it from the top to the bottom of the tree in the same zigzag pattern. This connected my orb clusters visually and created a shape I could build on.
3. Layer with Large Bulbs

I gathered large ornaments in gold, silver, rose gold, and glass tones from previous years. These were placed around the orbs to form clusters, further emphasizing the zigzag pattern. Combining metallic tones and glass adds a reflective quality, giving the tree depth and sparkle.
4. Incorporate Woodsy Elements

To maintain the woodsy whimsical theme, I added:
- Pine cones in various sizes.
- Branch and pine cone stems, tucked throughout the tree.
This natural touch softened the design and made it feel cohesive with my mantle.
5. Add Variety with Shapes and Textures

A mix of shapes and textures makes the tree dynamic and visually interesting. I included:
- Starburst ornaments for a celestial feel. (I’ve sourced a budget-friendly option for these!)
- Glass icicles, placed within the clusters and along the tree’s edges to create flow. (Link to Amazon )
- Picture ornaments I made last year of my kids for a personal touch.
6. Finish with Garland and Ribbon

To tie the design together, I draped a beaded multi-strand garland along the outer zigzag in a “U” shape. While I’ve had this garland for years and couldn’t find an exact source, any sparkly beaded garland would work.
I also added a tartan ribbon throughout the tree, which gave it a classic Ralph Lauren vibe.
7. Topping off the Christmas Tree

Finally, I placed my favorite star topper on the tree. While I couldn’t find my exact one, I’ve sourced a similar option for you.
Christmas Tree Design Secret: Embrace Negative Space

One of the key elements of this design is negative space. Leaving some areas bare enhances the contrast, making the tree feel lighter and more magical. The glass icicles, dripping into these open spaces, add an ethereal quality that’s hard to beat.
And there you have it! A whimsical Christmas tree full of charm and warmth. Check out my instagram reel for a closer look at how it all came together, and don’t forget to shop the post below for my favorite sources.
