How to Get the Perfect Copper Exterior Color

DIY | English Tudor Construction | Home Tour

Copper is one of those home design elements that can completely transform a home. But, only if you get it just right. Too shiny, and it feels harsh and new. Too aged, and it turns dark or even green…which is absolutely it’s own beauty with the living finish that ages over time. Here, I am sharing just how to get the perfect copper exterior color for your home.

But finding that perfect, warm copper tone? That’s the sweet spot I was going for in our new home.

When I first considered adding copper accents to our home, I knew I loved the look. But, I was also nervous. Copper can change fast, and without a plan. It can quickly shift from that rich, welcoming glow to a dark bronze or even develop a green patina. My personal goal was to achieve that timeless, lived-in copper color and preserve it at its peak.

We installed our copper features in late January/early February. At first, they were bright. Really bright. Between the gutters, garage awning, outdoor lanterns, and front entry, I started to worry that I had done too much. If you’ve ever installed new copper, you know exactly what I mean. That almost penny-like shine can be a little intimidating.

But after a few months of exposure to Utah’s weather, the copper began to naturally patina. The finish softened, deepened, and developed that rich, warm tone I had been hoping for all along. It finally hit that perfect balance – not too shiny, not too dark – just beautifully aged. And I knew I wanted to freeze it right there.

About nine months after installation, we started researching how to preserve the color before it continued to darken. After talking with several painters and doing our own research, we decided to use this clear protective coating which is guaranteed for 5-7 years!

Our painter had actually never used this product before. But after testing it on our home, he says he won’t use anything else to treat copper, it’s that good! This coating can be sprayed or brushed on, which makes it versatile for different surfaces and details. Our painter ended up spraying everything since there was so much of it.

And then, I hand painted the copper lantern just above our entryway. it came aged but I didn’t want it to change any more. It works as a clear sealant that enhances the copper’s natural glow while preventing further oxidation and patina. We applied two coats to fully lock in the color. This product should keep our copper looking this good for 5–7 years before needing to be reapplied.

If you’re incorporating copper exterior or interior accents into your home, whether it’s a small or a major exterior feature, timing is everything. Let it age naturally until it reaches a tone YOU love, then seal it to preserve that look.

Copper has such a powerful impact on curb appeal. Getting the tone just right makes all the difference. I’m so glad we trusted the process! I am even more excited to use the same technique on our chimney cap now that it’s finally reached that perfect patina!

Tell me…would you add copper accents to the exterior of your home?

  1. Your timing is perfect, Mysha. My projects this week were: gold-leafing my first tabletop (looks great) and copper painting the black metal table legs of two side tables. Sealed the gold-leaf right away but didn’t get around to the tables. Now I’m glad I didn’t. I’ll wait till they settle down a bit and then “freeze” them with the same lacquer. Thanks!!
