Colorful Bedroom Retreat

DIY | Interior Decor

Did you know you can have a bedroom retreat full of color? Creating a calming space you actually want to come home and relax in is about more than just comfy furniture and all white everything. If your walls are a loud & vibrant, it’s going to do nothing for your stress level. But you don’t have to resign yourself to plain white. Take some inspiration from my sister’s new colorful bedroom retreat!

As colorful as this room is, it still feels totally serene. How? It’s called a triadic color scheme. The colors that are situated at 120 degrees from each other (creating a triangle)on the color wheel create a triadic color scheme. See below. These colors work in harmony with each other, esp when one color is used dominantly and the other two remaining colors as highlights.

If you shift the triangle to the right, the colors in this bedroom are blue, coral, and yellow.

Beyond the color scheme there are three steps to turn your bedroom into a retreat: Create a cozy, comfy bed with layers, add seating, and clear the clutter

I made two design boards for my sister, CLICK HERE to see them both. I left the walls white, but accented the ceiling with Motor City Blue by Valspar.  It’s just a touch darker than the headboard, but reads as the same color in the space.  Blue is obviously the main color here and boy does it look luxurious on this velvety headboard.  The headboard is made up of wall panels called Vant Panels.  They come in a wide variety of colors and fabrics. This one is called velvet antique blue. You can completely change the look with different layouts as well.  This was my first time using this product, but I am happy to report that I would use them again in a heart beat!

Creating a colorful bedroom retreat with layers

I kept the main bedding fairly neutral and popped in color with pillows.  Although the bedding is mostly gray and white, it is full of textural interest. Layers are a key element in creating an irresistible master retreat. I wrote a whole post on how to achieve a 5 star hotel bed at home -check that out for tips on layering.  The sheets showcase a small geometric print, the blanket is white but heavy with texture, and the duvet brings a new sheen and a bold pattern to the mix.

Two velvety coral throw pillows bring the pink/orange color up from the floor and mimic the texture of the headboard.  I brought in one very colorful patterned pillow and a more muted lumbar pillow to finish the look.

Creating a colorful bedroom retreat by adding seating

A large round ottoman sits at the foot of the bed.  The round shape breaks up all the straight lines in the bedroom and serves as a place to sit and take your shoes off.  I love using ottomans because they can be moved around the room to be utilized as seating or a foot rest.  This ottoman is finished in one of my favorite fabrics and completed with a yellow tassel to match the lumbar pillow on the bed.

There is additional seating in the corner of the room.  This was a stray chair that my sister had floating around her house.  It finally found a home here.  Still on the hunt for the perfect side table to complete this corner.  Did you notice the yellow detail on the curtain panels?  Yellow is one of our triadic colors and even marries in the brass lighting fixtures.

Create a colorful bedroom retreat by clearing the clutter

Ever wonder how people keep their nightstand clean and pretty? You’ll find your answer in the drawers below! If you select furniture with plenty of closed storage, you will always have a place for everything. How do you feel when you walk into a room with stuff stacked everywhere vs a room that is clutter free.  If you want your bedroom to feel like a retreat, you gotta put your stuff away! I love the brass hardware and the simple lines of the nightstands and dresser.  They come in white, gray, and a stained wood option.  They are delivered in one piece and very heavy!

The last two initial components to this bedroom design are the rug and the art.  Although the rug is very colorful, it’s diluted with the watercolor appearance.  I absolutely love this rug and it feels kind of like art itself.

The duo art prints on the wall were the final touch the space needed.  They carry all the important colors in our triadic color scheme and echo the swirly organic movement you see in the rug.  I had these prints matted with a heavy bottom for a more modern touch.  These prints are the newest pieces by christie Adelle (one of my favorite local artists).
