A Cozy, Colorful Fall Home Tour that will have you rethinking your approach to fall decorcozy colorful home tour - how to decorate for fall

If you are a regular here at Remington Avenue (blog named after my eldest daughter), then you know I’m no stranger to color.  There are some blue staples that never leave, but for the most part I like to switch out various colorful patterns in home accessories and decor.  Todays fall home is no different! Here is a little peek at my fall front porch.  This triangle copper wreath was the start of my fall color scheme.  I knew I wanted to incorporate copper metal tones and hues of red and purple into this year’s fall decor.  I made this unconventional fall wreath last week in 30 minutes.  Click HERE for the full tutorial and sources.

Another piece that I’m loving this year is this “Hello Fall” wood sign.  Use the code: remave10 for 10% off this fall sign and all others from her shop! It comes in unfinished wood and you can paint it what ever color you like (mine is the large size FYI).  I painted mine with this charcoal chalk spray paint.  Wouldn’t it be cute layered over a wreath as well.  Endless possibilities! Come back next week and I’ll give you the full tour of my fall front porch, but that’s it for now! Get The Porch Look

We’ll skip the entry way for now, but it will be showcased on the Home Depot blog next month!  I installed a fun shiplap application behind my front door.  I can’t wait to share it, but you can see all my entry way design plans by clicking here for now.

And now we move into the heart of the home where fall colors really emerge.  To create a cozy, colorful fall atmosphere, think in layers!  Layer blankets, pillows, and throws…but let’s move beyond that and layer colors, textures, and patterns too.  The more layers, the more comfortable and cozy the space becomes!  I always switch out my throw pillows for each changing season.  This fall I added lush velvety wine colored pillows, jewel toned floral pillows, and black and white patterned pillows scattered all about.  You may not associate flowers with fall, but with these deep rich colors, this floral pillow will take me right into winter!

I layered a cozy wine colored throw blanket over my spindle chair just like I would layer a cardigan over my body.  It carries a nice woven texture and balances the wine velvet pillows across the room.  Here is a little design tip:  when working with color in a space, think in triangles.  Repeat the color in 3 different locations around the room.  This will give the space balance.  You can see I repeated the wine color in 3 different textures as well.  Velvet pillows, a textured throw blanket, and faux branches complete the color triangle while adding layers of texture as well…So tricky I know 🙂

My DIY built in bookshelves provide another opportunity to introduce autumn into my home.  By reversing my book collection, with the pages facing out, it showcases the age and beauty of the pages.  I love the variation of white to amber papers creating a sense of history.  Books scream cozy comfort.  I can imagine reading my favorite book right here by the fire as the weather cools.

Of course what is fall without pumpkins.  Keeping with my metallic theme, I stacked copper and silver pumpkins in this bold black and white bowl.  This checked bowl is so versatile, I use it for decor and in the kitchen.

My mercury glass pumpkins also make an appearance along side a black and white ginger jar.  It’s balanced and symmetrical, but not the same!  A “gather” sign and a transparent bowl of wood and textured decorative balls finish off the look.  Shelves are such an easy spot to rotate seasonal decor.

My Christie Adelle painting has remained in its prominent mantel location, but I switched out the decor on either side.  Apothecary jars are one of my favorite accessories to keep around.  I have used them for succulent gardens, flower vases, and filled them with various items.  You can see here I have selected two different shapes and sizes and filled them with mini birch wood logs and metallic acorns.  Just a simple nod to the season.  Again, I repeated the back and white patterned theme by adding a checked bow and a couple of black candle sticks to the mix.

Peeking into my kitchen, my turquoise console table houses some seasonal fruit.  I recently added this console table here and it doubles as a buffet!  I love the versatility! My children love fresh fruit, so I keep it around the house.  Edible decor is the best don’t ya think!

To the dining area we go!  My table centerpiece combines all the color themes into one focal point.  Deep hues of red and purple emerge from a metallic pot layered on top of a black and white checked cake stand.  Invest into versatile pieces that can be used for different applications.  A cake stand doesn’t have to be just a cake stand, and a copper pot can become a floral vessel or a bowl to house seasonal fruit!

Speaking in cozy, colorful layers, they don’t stop at the table!  I started with this wine colored table runner and these round natural placemats.  I layered the metallic chargers right on top.  I started with the silver chargers (which are actually plastic) and decided I need a little more metallic tones.  I spray painted half of the silver charger plates with this copper paint.  I love how they turned out.  If you have plastic charger plates like me, consider painting them.  You can always paint them back to the original color, or continue to stretch them with other looks!

A classic white plate can be used for any table.  I added these colorful black and white stripe pumpkins, and these bold polka dot beauties on each plate.  Remember the plum branches from the copper triangle wreath on my door…well they are back!  It’s interesting to combine the rustic elements with the more refined patterns.  The plum branches with the bold pumpkins and the flowers in the copper pot all provide different feelings.  Did you notice the real plums in the floral arrangement by the way?

Plums are an overlooked fruit when it comes to transitioning from summer to fall.  I love the deep rich purple color and the tart taste.  To showcase their yummy flavor, I made a rustic plum and blackberry tart.  It is sweet and tart and carries a similar flavor profile to strawberry rhubarb pie.  If you are a pie lover like me, be sure to join me next week for my fall porch reveal and a slice of pie!  I’m sharing the recipe with ya’ll.
