Black & white powder room reveal

Its finally done! For such a small space, this bathroom really absorbed a lot of my time. From diy wainscoting to wallpapering for the first time- The Black & White Powder room Reveal is Here.

Powder room reveal- flooring and vanity

Starting from the ground up, my flooring is a natural slate tile. In fact, it is the exact same tile I used in my entry way inlay. CLICK HERE for more information.

Tip: Be aware when working with any natural stone, you will see a variance in color, texture, and density.  You’ll need to pick though the stone tiles and discard the ones that don’t work in order to get a more uniform look.  You can do this yourself or relay the specifics to your installer.  I had the slate laid out in a herringbone pattern with a light colored grout for contrast. The grout color I used is called “FROST”- a light gray.

The custom vanity is made from natural white oak with a clear finish- no stain color added. I love the natural grains and the warmth it brings to the space. This material is used throughout my entire home.  I designed this vanity to accommodate my young children. Since this is the most used bathroom in the house (right off the kitchen) the addition of the sliding step stool was a game changer. It’s finished with polished nickel hardware to match the faucet and other bathroom hardware.

The vanity counter top is made of quartz. It’s called Calcutta Novo from Arizona tile. I used this quartz in several bathrooms throughout my home and in my basement kitchen.

 DIY bathroom wainscoting & wallpaper

Although the bathroom was designed with great bones, I always intended on adding my own personal stamp. With the addition of the dark wainscoting and black & white wallpaper, this powder room went from GOOD to GREAT! The diy wainscoting is simply applied molding boxes. I did it myself and you can find the FULL TUTORIAL HERE.  The color is Cheating Heart by Benjamin Moore- a dark charcoal gray with blue undertones.  This is the same color as the door and all the interior doors in my home. I absolutely love the combination of the dark charcoal blue wainscoting with the bold black and white wallpaper. The color combination makes it feel rich and collected. This gorgeous wallpaper is from Copper Corners. The artist , Mary Catherine, is truly gifted and has so many great wallpaper prints in her shop. This particular paper is called “Laundry” and comes in 14 color options.  I was completely surprised at the ease of the install. Honestly this was my first time installing prepasted wallpaper and I found the process to be quite enjoyable. I’ll admit the first strip I hung was completely nerve racking, but once I got that out of the way, the rest went smoothly.

If you are taking on wallpaper for the first time my advice for you would be this;  Every piece gets easier, the first is the biggest hurdle.  The paper doesn’t dry for a couple hours, allowing you time to manipulate it on the wall, shift it, and get it exactly where you want it.  Powder room style edit

The final details come with styling. Not only is this powder room the most used bathroom in the house, bur it’s also the bathroom that visiting guests use.  For this reason, a few accessories go a long way. Make sure extra toilet paper is stocked and accessible. Bathroom spray, a great smelling hand soap, kleenex, and a vase of flowers top of the entire look and function.  You might also notice I have a few different metals going on in here. I love a mixed metal finish- continuing the collected artistic look. Brass sconce lights, a bronze decorative mirror, and polished nickel hardware combine to create a truly unique look.
