Skillet Apple Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble
We all have that ridiculously simple dessert that is so flavorful it tastes like you have been baking all day…that is my Skillet Apple Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble. It’s ooey and gooey in all the best ways. The surprise of almond extract gives it an unexpected depth of flavor. It truly makes it different – and elevated – than other apple desserts.

This apple crisp is PERFECT for Thanksgiving which, I can’t even believe, is this month!
It’s almost time to set the table, gather around with your favorite family, friends and of course, favorite FOOD!

The absolute best part of this fall recipe is that the crumble can be prepped ahead of time, making one less mess and one less project you have to do on an already busy day. This apple crisp is a great alternative to apple pie, without the fuss of making a crust. I love a crusty pie. Some people could do without the crust – this is for them, but still with a great apple flavor.

This Skillet Apple Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble can be adjusted to make it gluten free! Simply substitute gluten free flour and gluten free rolled oats!
Skillet Apple Crisp with Oatmeal Crumble

- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 Â tsp nutmeg
- 1 cup cold, salted butter
- 2/3 cup sugar (if you like more tart reduce sugar to 1/2 cup – I prefer it like this)
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 7 cups peel and diced granny smith apples
- 1/2 tsp pure almond extract
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
-
Make crumble topping:Â
Combine oats, flour, dark brown sugar, cinnamon, & nutmeg, in a medium bowl.
-
Cut in butter with a pastry blender until well combined and large crumbs form. Chill in the freezer until ready to use.
-
Make apple filling:Â
Whisk together sugar, corn starch, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl. Add sliced apples and almond extract. Toss gently to combine.
-
Spoon apple filling into skillet and sprinkle evenly with crumble topping.
-
Bake crisp:Â
Place baking dish on preheated baking sheet and bake for 55 to 60 minutes, until golden brown and filling is bubbling. Mine only took 50 minutes.
-
Cool crisp on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.
-
Refrigerate leftover crisp tightly covered (or in an airtight container) up to 2 days.Â
Recipe Notes
You can make with other apples but I prefer the tartness of granny smith.
I also reduce the granulated sugar in the filling to 1/2 cup because I like it a tad more tart.Â

I am using my absolute favorite pans – they come in so many fun colors and they are on SALE! You can make this apple crisp and many other recipes because they can go from stove to oven! They are non toxic and non stick and super multifunctional. They make an amazing gift too!

My family loves this dessert warm with vanilla ice cream and caramel drizzle. Personally I prefer it the next morning cold and right out of the fridge…breakfast of champions am I right??

The recipe says to put into a prepared skillet. What needs to be done to prepare the skillet? Butter? Preheat? This sounds delicious!!! Thank you
If you are using a cast iron skillet the skillet must be seasoned. I am using a nonstick oven safe pan so no need for extra preparation there.
Hey…. Sounds delicious! What oven temp ?
Step 1 on the instructions 350 degrees.
The recipe is missing the cooking temperature and the amount of salt for the apple filling. I’ve bought all of the ingredients!
The temperature is noted in Step 1. And the amount of salt is under the ingredients with the instructions for the salt noted in Step 4.
She’s edited and added what was missing, so now the recipe is complete! 🙂
Sounds divine. I can’t wait to make it!
