DIY Wall Mounted Planter Box With Trellis

DIY | Home Tour

This may look like the start of another box beam, but trust me, it’s not! It’s actually an outdoor planter box! And it will be going out on my deck right outside the kitchen windows, with a beautiful trellis hung above it. This blank wall on my deck needed something, and no, I wasn’t going to hang a TV there. I wanted to look out my kitchen window and see something beautiful. And that’s when I thought of this DIY wall mounted planter box with trellis design.

A couple things to note before I get into the tutorial! First, my box is 6 feet long. So you’ll need to adjust your measurements and amount of wood needed based off of the size of your box. Second, my planter is made of pine. I primed and painted it with a semi gloss paint to protect the wood from rot. If you want a wood planter (not painted) I suggest cedar, but you could also use cypress or any other green treated wood to prevent rot. Now, let’s get into the tutorial!

To make a 6ft planter box (adjust wood amounts to your desired size)

Supplies and Materials

(2) 1″x6″x8′ pine common boards
(1) 1″x5″x6′ pine common board
15 ft  door and window stop molding

decorative corbel
Fluted trim for decorative diamond (optional)

metal trellis
Kreg jig and 1-1/4″ inch screws
Brad nails
Nail gun
Saw
Wood glue
Trellis

Step 1:

If needed, cut your boards down to the correct size and trim off the manufactured edges.

Step 2:

Pre-drill your holes for the back of the box that you will use to hang it on the wall.

Step 3:

Using a crew jig, I created pocket holes on the bottom board of my planter box. Since my planter box is so long, I chose to create 5 pocket holes on each side of the bottom of my planter box to attach the sides. I felt this was more durable than just using nails.

Step 4:

Assemble your box! Apply your wood glue to one side, then secure it in place with clamps, and then add your screws into each pocket hole. Repeat for the other side. To attach the small side pieces, I just used may nail gun and glue.

Step 5:

A plain old box wasn’t going to do it for me. So I added pieces of trim. To do this, I started by sanding down the front of my box. I glued the trim pieces in place and secured them with clamps, then used a pin nailer to nail them in place.

Step 6:

I took a scrap piece of fluted trim I had leftover and cut out a decorative diamond using my jigsaw for a special added detail. If you have been following me for awhile, you’ll notice this diamond detail repeated throughout the design of my home. I used wood glue to glue the pieces of my diamond down.

Step 7:

Once that was dry, it was time to prime and paint. I primed the whole box using Kilz Standard Interior Primer and Sealer. The color I used is Black Magic BM, it’s the same color as my interior doors and windows.

Step 8:

Hang your box using the pre-drilled holes from step two. This was a little tricky because I had to drill into the brick, but I managed. A hammer drill would’ve been the best method to get through the brick. But, since I don’t have one, I just applied pressure to the back of my drill as if I was hitting it with a hammer. Make sure you have a masonry drill bit and masonry self anchoring screws!

To secure the box to the wall I used a socket wrench and washers.

Step 9:

Hang your trellis! Using the same method as above, I drilled holes into the brick to attach my trellis. You can purchase this metal trellis HERE.

Step 10:

Attach the decorative supports. This is not necessary, because these supports actually don’t do anything, but they give the illusion that the box is held up by them.

Step 11:

Add your plants! I planted Boston Ivy because it will climb pretty quickly but doesn’t cause damage to your brick.
